# Work and Personal Browsing Usually Mix at Launch

> Most people already keep two accounts. The mix-up happens earlier: one Dock icon, and whichever identity you used last.

## The mix-up is not that you forgot to separate them

Work and personal browsing need different accounts, extensions, and history. That part is obvious. The mix-up usually happens one step earlier. The Dock still has one browser icon, and the last-used identity comes with it.

You mean to open a personal tab. Work Gmail is still signed in. Or you join a meeting from the account you used to read the news. The profile system existed; it just appeared after the window was already open.

## Two browsers can work. They are not the only option.

Chrome for work and Safari for personal use is a clear visual split. It also splits shortcuts, extensions, and Dock space. If you switch several times a day, that cost adds up.

Profiles keep one familiar browser while still isolating cookies and sign-ins. Separate browsers still help when you want a stronger visual or technical boundary, or when you need a browser that DockSpark does not support. Many people end up with a hybrid: one primary browser with Work and Personal, plus a second browser for testing. A longer comparison is in [Browser Profiles vs. Separate Browsers](/blog/browser-profiles-vs-separate-browsers).

## Name the two you actually use

“Work” and “Personal” are enough for most days. Add Development or a client profile only when that context has its own accounts or risk. A long list of near-duplicates makes the Dock panel slower, not clearer.

Color helps if it means the same thing every time you see it. The test is simple: can you choose in a second, without decoding an email address?

DockSpark does not create those profiles. Create them in the browser, then add the ones you actually switch between. [How to keep that list understandable](/blog/set-up-browser-profiles-that-stay-organized) matters more than how many you have.

## Make the first click the right one

The useful change is not a new philosophy of browsing. It is moving the Work / Personal choice to the Dock icon you already click. Hover a supported browser, pick the identity, and start there — including a private window when this visit should not touch either profile.

Configuration stays on your Mac. The browser keeps the isolation. The Dock just stops launching yesterday’s context by default.
